It came as a shock to me when I found out that Professor Finneas Schmoe, my head of house, was actually a Hufflepuff. I just felt that he would have made the perfect Ravenclaw, but I'm sure the Sorting House knows best. I personally think he was an interesting choice to fill the position after the departure of Professor Ayana Sissay. On our first night back, we sort of had to clean the Ravenclaw tower with actual muggle cleaning tools—buckets, cloths, rubbish bins, you name them—and that must have been influenced by the Muggle enthusiast in him. Staring the term off with a cleaning party isn't how most of us would want to start the term with, but the cleaning supplies did the trick. Dust bunnies, be gone! Aside from that, I heard Professor Schmoe had an unexpected visit from Helga Hufflepuff herself. I don't know how that's related to this, but I just thought it was rather cool. I would have been honoured if Rowena Ravenclaw and I had a talk. It doesn't happen all the time. Profesor Schmoe has been our Muggle Studies professor for two terms now, but this happens to be his first term as head of house. "I think he's pretty cool. A bit awkward sometimes, but aren't we all? Anyway, it's clear that he cares about us Ravenclaws, which I really appreciate," Jina Morin, a sixth year and my fellow Ravenclaw, said about him. He's awkward, yes, but he's also kinda schmoesome. We, Ravenclaws, are indeed lucky to have him.
ravenclaw prefects
Ravenclaws of all years let out a sigh of relief this term as they were finally able to return to their familiar tower on the seventh floor. One of the Ravenclaws leading the way this term was the curly haired Canadian, Ewan Jones. Jones was new to the badge - and any leadership position - this term, and stepped up to the plate during a term with some...let's say unprecedented challenges thrown their way! Ewan was gracious enough to give us some insight into his first term as prefect.
What was it like seeing Rowena Ravenclaw in the flesh? It was a little surreal. At first, I couldn’t really believe it but then I wanted to know how it was possible. I mean, strange things happen at Hogwarts all the time and ghosts are just the norm but this was just on another level.
Typical Ravenclaw - wanting to know WHY it was happening as well! How did you feel about returning to Hogwarts this term after spending last term at Beauxbatons? I was happy to be back. Nothing is better than returning home to Hogwarts and I think, if I’d spent my last year there then it would have been strange. This is my last year and I want to bow out here with my friends.
What was it like working with your co-prefect, Missa Renaldi? Missa? She’s cool. I mean, it’s good to have another prefect that can do a good job.
What surprised you most about being prefect? Nothing. I mean, we were told what we had to do so it’s not really a surprise. I guess, the only thing that really kind of stood out was being in a position of power? Or, having people looking at you and expecting you to set an example. It was a little tough…always trying to be perfect.
That's true - it's not exactly a secret what is involved with the prefects badge! What was your reaction when you got the badge? Pure shock. I did not expect it at all. Honestly, I forgot that was even happening until I saw the badge fall out of my letter
What advice do you have for your fellow Ravenclaws? Advice? I’m not the best person to give advice. Just be yourself. Do your best. You can’t do more than that.
What is your favorite subject? Lease favorite subject? Favourite? Easy. Charms. Maybe Transfiguration. Least? Astronomy.
What's it like working under the leadership of Professor Schmoe? Professor Schmoe is…interesting? Different? I like him. He keeps things interesting.
Interesting is definitely a good way to describe him. What was your biggest challenge this term as prefect? I think just trying to manage my NEWT studies and prefect duties.
What was your favorite part of this past term? My detention? Nah, I guess I’d have to say just coming back to Hogwarts.
Next up, the always charming Missa Renaldi! Missa was another newcomer to the badge this term, and immediately stepped up to her new role. Fresh off the drama of both OWLs and Beauxbatons, the sixth year female prefect also showed amazing leadership skills while dealing with all the craziness that accompanied this term.
What was it like seeing Rowena Ravenclaw in the flesh? Incredible at first. But it became less incredible each time she made another appearance. I mean she wanted to take over the school!
Yeah, that wasn't exactly very...nice of her. Speaking of the school, how did you feel about returning to Hogwarts this term after spending last term at Beauxbatons? Honestly? I was just so relieved. I had been so excited to be at Beauxbatons but the way we were treated there, it just made me appreciate and miss Hogwarts more.
What was it like working with your co-prefect, Ewan Jones? It’s good. I mean - he can be a little depressing at times but when it comes to sharing responsibilities and being a team player? He is good.
I'm sure that made for an interesting dynamic between the two of you. What surprised you most about being prefect? I think it was the realisation that I had been noticed. I didn’t expect it. I had wanted it but I never thought I’d actually get it.
What was your reaction when you got the badge? I was over the moon! I hugged my dad and ended up crying!
Aww, how sweet! I'm sure he was so proud! What advice do you have for your fellow Ravenclaws? When in doubt, take a nap.
What is your favorite subject? Least favorite subject? Ancient Runes is my favourite! And you wanna hear something cool? The Minister of Magic? He loves it too. And I got him to sign an ancient runes book of mine! Anyway, I wouldn’t call Potions my least favourite but I struggle with it a lot - so I guess it automatically qualifies as being one.
What's it like working under the leadership of Professor Schmoe? It’s interesting. He is very easy to approach and talk to - so he makes it easy on my nerves.
What was your biggest challenge this term as prefect? I think knowing that whatever I did would be a reflection of that badge on my robes made me overthink things. And overcoming that, and not doubting myself was definitely a challenge. Because suddenly I also had to be a good example for other students. And I really didn’t want to mess that up.
What was your favorite part of this past term? The fact that OWLs were done, and NEWTs were a whole term away!
